Addiction

Sketchbook
Addiction is a very serious disease that takes over the body and causes many harmful effects. Addiction can occur with something healthy like exercising, something unhealthy like smoking or even something little like chewing gum. Anything can become addictive. When a person becomes addicted to something it is very hard to break that addiction. In the photo the person is holding the pack of gum as if they are dealing it like a drug. The other person is handing money to the “dealer” as if they are buying the drug (gum). Having the person holding the pack of gum like this symbolizes how harmful getting addicted to something is even if it is gum. I took something simple and gave it a deeper meaning, which is anything is addictive and whether its unhealthy or not it’s hard to break the addictive cycle.
There is a lot of symbolism within this photo. For example, I edited the photo to have a darker, gloomier aspect to it. This symbolizes how addiction isn’t good and by having the colors reflect that it changes the mood of the photo to negative. The subjects of the photo are sitting on a bench where there aren’t a lot of people around because it is secretive. I did not include the person’s face because I wanted to have the photo represent that anyone can become addicted to anything. I have 1 piece of gum sticking out to represent the drug dealing aspect of the photo. The other person is handing them money to also symbolize the drug deal. Both of the people are doing this secretly because it’s an addiction and people with addictions mainly like to keep them secret from others. This part of the photo gives it a deeper meaning. For example, the gum is overall being represented as a “drug” to the person. This “drug” is extremely addictive and not a habit they can simply break.
