Masks

Unedited Photos

People tend to hide their true selves from the world in today’s society. Masks are used to hide people’s personalities or show their fake personality. For example, people tend to show others that they are happy and okay when in reality they are actually depressed. Throughout the brainstorming process, I thought of someone being “two faced” and hiding who they really are and someone wearing a physical mask of happiness.

I decided on the “two faced” idea. I used masks to show how a person is hiding their personality. First I wanted to express the subject with their friends laughing and having a good time. For this photo the background was white to symbolize happiness and how this is the face the person shows to the world. Next I took a photo of the subject being sad. For this photo I took a picture of the subject in front of a black background. The black background symbolizes how this is the face the person keeps hidden in the dark. I put the two faces back to back to express how the person has two sides to them but only shows the one to others.

I used just the plain white and black backgrounds because other backgrounds would be too distracting. Having the white and black backgrounds makes the viewer focus more on the subject rather than the background.

To make this photo I had to do a trial photo. For example, the first photo I took was the same as the final but since the person didn’t line up on both sides I had to reshoot. I had to make sure the subject of the photo stayed in the same spot when taking each photo so they look like one person with two heads.

Overall this was the best way to express the message of masks and how people hide their true selves from society nowadays.
