Consumption
Sketchbook
Consumption can be defined as something that is used. I wanted the focus of my photo to be based on over consumption. The word over consumption, immediately makes me think of our generation and our overuse of technology and social media. I wanted to portray the message that we use too much technology and don’t experience life to the fullest anymore. Technology has become so overused and powerful in our lives that it has come to the point where it controls us. We are constantly asking ourselves “Where’s my phone?” , “What’s happening on twitter?”, “Who posted on instagram?” , “What’s on their snapchat story?” and more. Using technology like this has become so normal to us that we don’t think twice about it. Nowadays people can’t go out and have fun without worrying about their phone and what’s happening on social media. This addiction has become so real that I wanted to express it in my photo that our phones power and control us.
To showcase this idea I have someone using their phone by looking on instagram. The charger cable is then “plugged” into the person like an IV to express they need their phone to survive. By having the cord look like it’s an IV symbolizes the need for it because when you are in the hospital you need an IV to give you fluids to survive and be healthy. The charger cord is also frayed to symbolize the overuse of technology and how it is becoming damaged due to people using technology too much. The person in the photo also has a greyish tint to them to symbolize the phone draining the person to death because of how much they use it. The overconsumption of technology is slowly killing us because we don’t experience life as much but instead just sit inside on our phones.
